Cornwall is a county located in the South West region of England, within the United Kingdom. It is bordered by the Celtic Sea to the north and west, the English Channel to the south, and the county of Devon to the east, separated by the River Tamar which forms most of the boundary between them. Cornwall constitutes the most western part of the South West Peninsula of the island of Great Britain. The most southwestern point of Great Britain is Land's End, while the southernmost point is Lizard Point. Cornwall has a population of 563,600 and spans an area of 3,563 km2 (1,376 sq mi). Since 2009, the county has been governed by the unitary authority, Cornwall Council. The ceremonial county of Cornwall also encompasses the Isles of Scilly, which are governed separately. The administrative hub of Cornwall, and its only city, is Truro. Cornwall is the ancestral home of the Cornish people and the cultural and ethnic origin of the Cornish diaspora. It maintains a unique cultural identity that mirrors its history, and is acknowledged as one of the Celtic nations. It was previously a Brythonic kingdom and later a royal duchy. The Cornish nationalist movement disputes the current constitutional status of Cornwall and advocates for greater autonomy within the United Kingdom in the form of a devolved legislative Cornish Assembly with powers akin to those in Wales and Scotland. In 2014, Cornish people were granted minority status under the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, recognizing them as a distinct ethnic group.
